Despite my music obsession I found it extremely difficult to come up with a “Best Of” list for 2015. The uber-pretentious reasoning for this was, “music shouldn’t be confined to baseless rankings,” but in truth I was just indecisive. There was so much great music released last year. The jury’s still out if I’ll ever complete said list, but if I did Sharkmuffin would easily make the Top 10.
Formed in 2012, Sharkmuffin is the result of jam sessions between guitarist Tarra Thiessen and bassist Natalie Kirch at the latter’s beach house in Mantoloking, NJ. The following year saw the release of three EPs including the breakthrough 1097, named after Kirch’s beach house, which was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. Sharkmuffin’s drummer lineup includes an impressive list of talent including singer/songwriter Janet LaBelle and former Hole drummer Patty Schemel, who was recruited to record the band’s debut full-length, Chartreuse.
Chartreuse, released in Summer 2015, delivered on the promise of their earlier releases by unleashing a 10-track blast of unapologetic noise punk. Now with current drummer Kim Deuss as a permanent fixture behind the kit, the band is wasting no time in 2016. The trio is hard at work on their sophomore LP due to drop this Fall and are releasing two singles, “Red” and “Fun Stuff” on flexi-disc on February 12 via Little Dickman Records. To coincide with said release, Sharkmuffin is throwing a shindig at The Lost Room in Los Angeles, CA that same day. Immediately following this performance, the band will embark on a US tour of the west coast and southwest, stopping at SXSW in Austin, TX. A Canadian and European tour, a first for the band, is scheduled for May.
